2021 Omaka Reserve Pinot Noir, Saint Clair

Marlborough, New Zealand

The Moonlit Marlborough Reserve

This is Pinot Noir with darkness, perfume and a beautifully polished edge. From Saint Clair’s Reserve range, the estate’s pinnacle selection, it opens with concentrated black cherry, blackcurrant and plum, then gathers notes of Kalamata olive, wildflowers, spice and toasty oak. There is generosity here, but also control, as if all that fruit has been carefully tailored into something sleek and composed.

The palate is elegant and richly detailed, with fine tannins that feel almost like powdered cocoa. Dark berries, roasted coffee beans and subtle oak spice move through the wine, while Marlborough's freshness keeps everything lifted and precise. The finish is long, savoury and quietly luxurious. It is drinking beautifully now, but there is enough structure and depth to develop further over the next 8 to 10 years.

For when you want Pinot Noir with silk, shadow and a little after-dark glamour.
Pairs with duck breast, lamb rump, mushroom Wellington, venison with blackberry sauce, roast beetroot, or a truffled cheese toastie.
If this wine were… a texture, it would be dark velvet brushed with cocoa powder.

Saint Clair Family Estate is one of Marlborough’s modern benchmarks, founded by Neal and Judy Ibbotson, whose family were among the region’s early grape growers. Since its first vintage in 1994, Saint Clair has built an exceptional reputation for precision, consistency and award-winning quality, particularly through its ability to match specific vineyard sites to expressive, characterful wines. The Omaka Reserve Pinot Noir sits at the top of the estate’s Pinot Noir range, described by Saint Clair as its very finest Pinot Noir, usually sourced from a single Southern Valleys vineyard and made for elegance, power, perfume and long-term complexity.

Neal and Judy Ibbotson were pioneers in the Marlborough wine industry, first planting vineyards in the valley in 1978 and then establishing Saint Clair Family Estate in 1994. They own 160 hectares of vineyard in 10 different Marlborough locations chosen specifically for the attributes of their individual “terroir” and ability to produce top-quality grapes. Neal Ibbotson combines his extensive expertise in viticulture with the talent of one of New Zealand’s leading winemaking teams led by Hamish Clark. Since 1994, when wines from the first vintage all won medals, including gold, the name Saint Clair has been synonymous with quality, and its award-winning record continues today. This is a sentiment shared by Bob Campbell MW, who says, “Saint Clair now makes the country’s and perhaps the world’s best Sauvignon Blanc”.

The fruit was cold-soaked for five days prior to fermentation to help extract maximum flavour and to enhance colour stability. 18% whole cluster bunches were added to the fermentation to add a stems component and another layer of complexity. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks with selected yeasts; the fermenting must was hand plunged up to six times daily at the peak of fermentation. At dryness, the wine was pressed, then racked off the gross lees to a mixture of 40% new French oak and older seasoned 225-litre oak barriques. The wine was aged for 10 months during which time it underwent malolactic conversion. The wine was then carefully extracted from oak, blended and prepared for bottling.
