2021 Garnacha 'Evodia', Bodegas San Alejandro
Aragon, Spain
 Old Vine Altitude
Bright, supple and full of easy charm, Evodia is Garnacha with real lift and lovely finesse. Raspberry, sweet-and-sour cherry and wild red berry fruit lead the way, laced with a distinctive mineral edge that keeps everything fresh and finely drawn. The palate is smooth and savoury, with soft tannins, juicy fruit and a gentle stony note that gives the wine shape and poise. There is generosity here, certainly, but it is carried with such ease that the whole wine feels elegant, fluid and beautifully drinkable from start to finish.
For when: supper is casual, the charcuterie is out, and one bottle is never going to be enough.
Pairs with: grilled lamb, chorizo, smoky aubergine, or tomato-rich dishes with paprika.
If this wine were a place: a high, sunlit Spanish hillside with warm stone underfoot and cool air rolling in at dusk.
Bodegas San Alejandro is a Garnacha specialist in Calatayud, where old vines and altitude shape some of Aragón’s most characterful reds. The fruit for Evodia comes from old Garnacha vines grown high in the hills, between 800 and 1,000 metres above sea level, where hot days and cool evenings stretch the ripening season and help build flavour, freshness and aromatic complexity. That combination of vine age, elevation and extreme climate gives the wine its particular appeal, generous in fruit, but always with energy, minerality and lift.
