2021 Foxglove Zinfandel, Varner Wines

Paso Robles, California, United States

Paso in Full Colour

Juicy, vibrant and packed with character, this is Zinfandel with all the warmth and swagger you want, but with a fresher, more lifted feel than the style often shows. Ripe blackberry, plum and red cherry surge from the glass, followed by violet, anise and a flicker of spice that gives the wine extra energy and shape. The palate is full and plummy, with bright fruit at its core, soft tannins and just enough savoury depth to keep everything grounded. There is generosity here, certainly, but it is carried with ease, making the wine feel exuberant, balanced and very easy to enjoy.

For when: the grill is hot, the table is noisy, and one bottle is definitely not going to be enough.
Pairs with: burgers, barbecue ribs, smoky sausages, or anything touched by fire and spice.
If this wine were a place: a warm Paso hillside at sunset, with dust in the air and smoke curling up from the grill.

Foxglove is the more approachable label from Bob and Jim Varner, created to offer everyday California wines with the same care and balance that made Varner so respected. The 2021 Zinfandel comes from Paso Robles, built around fruit from mature vines in the Double Black vineyard, with a little Petite Sirah blended in for extra depth and frame. The wine was made in a low-intervention style, fully destemmed, pressed at dryness, and aged in French oak, which helps explain its mix of vivid fruit, polish and easygoing appeal.

Varner Wines is the long-running California project of twin brothers Jim and Bob Varner, who began planting vines in 1980 and built their reputation on finely tuned, site-driven Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Their name became closely associated with the cool, elevated conditions of the Santa Cruz Mountains, where a low-intervention approach in both vineyard and cellar helped shape wines of precision, freshness and quiet depth. Alongside the more sought-after Varner bottlings, the brothers also created the Foxglove label to offer a more open, approachable expression of the same philosophy, wines made with care, clarity and a strong sense of place, but with everyday drinkability at their heart.
