2021 Chianti Classico Riserva, Querciabella
Chianti Classico, Tuscany, Italy
The Velvet Heart of Chianti
This is Sangiovese with polish, depth and a very Tuscan sense of purpose. It opens with black cherry, ripe red plum, wild strawberry and dried cranberry, before moving into violet, sweet tobacco, leather, graphite, incense and Mediterranean herbs. There is a darker, more serious core than the straight Chianti Classico, but it still carries that essential Sangiovese brightness.
The palate is structured, refined and beautifully alive, with concentrated cherry fruit, savoury spice and fine, persistent tannins. It has the grip and architecture of a proper Riserva, but not at the expense of elegance. Fresh acidity pulls everything into focus, giving the wine lift, length and a sense of quiet confidence. This is Chianti Classico for roast dinners, long evenings and the better sort of conversation.
For when you want Sangiovese with depth, grace and a little candlelit drama.
Pairs with bistecca alla Fiorentina, wild boar ragù, roast lamb, porcini risotto, aubergine parmigiana, ribollita, or aged pecorino.
If this wine were… a building, it would be a stone villa above Greve, warm lights in the windows and cypress trees in silhouette.
Querciabella is one of Chianti Classico’s benchmark estates, founded in 1974 in Ruffoli, above Greve in Chianti, with a vision of Tuscan wines defined by elegance, harmony and excellence. The estate is now recognised for its precise, site-led approach and long commitment to organic farming, with vineyards treated as living ecosystems. Its Riserva is a pure Sangiovese drawn from high-altitude sites in Greve, Lamole and Radda, then vinified lot by lot and matured for 16 months in French oak barriques and tonneaux. The result is one of Querciabella’s great expressions of Chianti Classico: layered, structured, vibrant and built to show the nobility of Sangiovese
