2021 Bear Cub Red, Pursued by Bear
Columbia Valley, Washington State, United States
Velvet Paws
Dark, plush and full of easy charm, the 2021 Bear Cub is a red that knows exactly how to win people over. Wild blueberry and dark plum leap from the glass, followed by cassis, mocha and a gentle thread of spicy oak that adds polish without stealing the spotlight. The palate is smooth, generous and immediately welcoming, with lush black fruit, silky tannins and a lovely sense of flow from start to finish. There is richness here, but it never feels weighty, just vibrant, polished and very easy to drink, with a long, lively finish that keeps you coming back for another sip.
For when: the food is hearty, the company is relaxed, and the bottle needs to go down far too easily.
Pairs with: burgers, braised beef, smoky sausages, or mushroom dishes with plenty of depth.
If this wine were a place: a warm lodge at dusk, with cedar in the air and something delicious already on the fire.
Pursued by Bear is the Washington State project founded by Kyle MacLachlan, created to make wines with both personality and precision. The 2021 Bear Cub draws fruit from four respected vineyards, including Les Collines in Walla Walla, Weinbau on the Wahluke Slope, and Dionysus and Sagemoor in White Bluffs, bringing extra depth and aromatic lift to the blend. In a low-yielding vintage that produced intensely coloured fruit, Bear Cub shows just how appealing Washington red can be when generosity, freshness and polish are kept beautifully in balance.
