2021 Barolo Lazzarito DOCG, Vietti
Barolo, Piedmont, Italy
The Serralunga Lion
This is Barolo with power, precision and a deep Serralunga pulse. It opens with dark cherry, red plum, fig, rose and violet, before more brooding notes of tar, liquorice, tobacco, wild herbs, sweet spice and crushed stone begin to rise. There is real force here, but the 2021 vintage gives it striking clarity, tension and lift.
The palate is structured, intense and built for the long road, with firm Nebbiolo tannins carrying dark fruit, orange peel, savoury herbs and salty mineral depth. It feels coiled and serious at this stage, but beautifully balanced, with freshness running through the wine and a long, commanding finish. Decant if opening now, or cellar and let the lion gather grace.
For when you want Barolo with muscle, pedigree and proper Serralunga authority.
Pairs with braised beef, roast game, truffle risotto, wild mushroom tajarin, slow-cooked lamb, aged parmesan, or a long winter lunch with proper conversation.
If this wine were… a creature, it would be a lion carved from dark stone, watching over Serralunga as the last light catches the vines.
Vietti is one of Piemonte’s great historic producers, based in Castiglione Falletto and admired for its pioneering role in single-vineyard Barolo. Its Lazzarito comes from the celebrated MGA vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, an amphitheatre-shaped site with south-west exposure, limestone and clay-rich soils, and old Nebbiolo vines that give the wine its structure, depth and mineral force. Vietti captures that character with its signature balance of tradition, precision, artistry and deep respect for the great crus of the Langhe.
