2020 Syrah, Château Oumsiyat
Bekaa Valley, Lebanon
The Bekaa Valley Nightfall
This is Lebanese Syrah with depth, warmth and a dark Mediterranean glow. It opens with blackberry, black cherry and ripe plum, before notes of dark chocolate, pepper, liquorice, dried herbs and warm spice begin to gather. The fruit is generous, but the wine keeps a lovely freshness, giving it shape rather than sheer weight.
The palate is full, textured and concentrated, with black fruit, cocoa, savoury spice and ripe tannins leading into a long, warming finish. It feels bold but polished, a Syrah with sun on its shoulders and mountain air in its lungs. Château Oumsiyat’s 2020 Syrah is listed as 100% Syrah from Mount Lebanon, with 14% ABV.
For when you want a red with richness, spice and proper Lebanese soul.
Pairs with grilled lamb, beef kofta, venison, mushroom ragù, smoky aubergine, slow-cooked beef, hard cheeses, or a mezze table with plenty of char.
If this wine were… a night, it would be a warm Bekaa evening, dark fruit on the table, smoke from the grill and spice in the air.
Château Oumsiyat is run by the Bou Sleiman family, with Joseph Bou Sleiman producing wines from a modern winery in Mtein. The family’s vineyards sit over 1,000 metres above sea level in the Bekaa Valley, between Mount Lebanon and the Anti-Lebanon Mountains, where altitude, microclimate and soils help create wines with freshness, depth and a Mediterranean feel.
