The Serralunga Lion

This is Barolo with muscle, polish and a deep Serralunga growl. It opens with black cherry, red plum, fig, rose and violet, before darker notes of tar, liquorice, tobacco, wild herbs, spice and crushed stone begin to gather. There is richness here, but also control, like power held firmly in the hand.

The palate is structured, intense and impressively long, with firm Nebbiolo tannins carrying dark fruit, orange peel, savoury spice and mineral depth. The 2020 vintage brings a little more generosity and warmth, while Lazzarito gives the wine its backbone, tension and serious ageing promise. Decant if opening now, or cellar and let the lion soften its roar.

Vietti is one of Piemonte’s great historic producers, based in Castiglione Falletto and admired for its pioneering role in single-vineyard Barolo. Its Lazzarito comes from the celebrated MGA vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, described by Vietti as an amphitheatre-shaped site with south-west exposure, limestone and clay-rich soils, and vines averaging around 42 years old. The wine captures the estate’s signature balance of tradition, precision, artistry and deep respect for the great crus of the Langhe.
