2020 Barolo Cerequio DOCG, Vietti

Barolo, Piedmont, Italy

The Silk Throne of Barolo

This is Barolo with fragrance, finesse and a quiet kind of majesty. From the celebrated Cerequio vineyard, it opens with red cherry, ripe strawberry, plum, rose and violet, before deeper notes of mint, liquorice, cinnamon, balsamic spice, tobacco and crushed stone begin to unfold. It is graceful rather than loud, but there is serious depth beneath the silk.

The palate is elegant, layered and beautifully composed, with fine Nebbiolo tannins carrying red fruit, orange peel, savoury spice and mineral detail. The 2020 vintage brings a touch of generosity and warmth, but Vietti keeps everything lifted, precise and wonderfully long. It is already captivating, though patience will let the perfume, polish and quiet power gather even more force.

For when you want Barolo with finesse, fragrance and aristocratic calm.
Pairs with truffle risotto, roast duck, braised beef, wild mushroom tajarin, game, aged parmesan, or lamb with rosemary.
If this wine were… a throne, it would be carved from old walnut, covered in deep red silk and placed beneath a ceiling painted with roses.

Vietti is one of Piemonte’s great historic producers, based in Castiglione Falletto and admired for its pioneering role in single-vineyard Barolo. Its 2020 Cerequio is officially Barolo DOCG, made from 100% Nebbiolo from the historic Cerequio MGA, with Vietti’s parcel located in the municipality of Barolo on limestone and clay-rich soils. It captures the estate’s signature balance of tradition, precision, artistry and deep respect for the great crus of the Langhe.

The Vietti family has produced fine wine from the heart of the Langhe since the 1800s, when Carlo Vietti established the winery in the medieval village of Castiglione Falletto. At the end of the 1950s, Alfredo Currado, husband of Luciana Vietti, introduced the idea of producing single vineyard crus in Barolo and Barbaresco and in 1961 one of the very first Barolo Crus was produced by Vietti: Rocche di Castiglione. Alfredo was known locally as the ‘Father of Arneis’ as he dedicated time and research into reviving the nearly extinct Arneis variety. Passionate about fine art, in 1974 Alfredo and Luciana started incorporating beautiful works of art on their iconic wine labels. In the 1990s their son and fourth generation winemaker, Luca Currado Vietti, continued the family winemaking legacy. In 2016, the Krause family purchased Vietti and worked alongside Luca until his retirement in 2023. They further developed the estate with the purchase of new, renowned crus in Barolo and Barbaresco, and in Colli Tortonesi where Timorasso flourishes. In 2022, Vietti was awarded 'Winery of the Year' by Antonio Galloni, Vinous.

The grapes were gently pressed. Skin-contact fermentation lasted for around four weeks in a steel tank, which included pre- and post-ferment maceration, involving the traditional submerged-cap method. Malolactic conversion took place in oak and the wine was matured for 32 months in Slavonian and French oak casks. It was bottled without filtration.
