2019 Higher Earth Syrah, St Hallett
Eden Valley, Australia
This is St Hallett showing a cooler, more lifted side of its Shiraz mastery. From Eden Valley’s higher ground, it opens with blackberry, black cherry and dark plum, then moves into violet, black pepper, graphite, clove, dried herbs and a little smoky cedar. It is still unmistakably South Australian, but this is the sleek, aromatic, Syrah-styled expression rather than the broad-shouldered Barossa bruiser.
The palate is bold but finely drawn, with dark berry fruit, cherry skin, spice and a grippy, chalk-like tannin profile. There is concentration from the dry, low-yielding 2019 vintage, yet the wine keeps freshness, detail and elegance. It finishes long, savoury and peppered, with enough structure to drink well now with food or continue developing in the cellar.
For when you want Shiraz with altitude, perfume and a sharper suit.
Pairs with lamb rump, peppered steak, venison, mushroom pithivier, aubergine parmigiana, beef en croûte, or aged cheddar.
St Hallett is one of the Barossa’s defining Shiraz producers, established by the Lindner family in 1944 and widely known for its deep understanding of old vines, grower parcels and regional expression. Higher Earth shows the estate’s Eden Valley voice: cooler, more perfumed and more precise, with fruit selected from some of the finest Eden Valley parcels in the dry 2019 season. Individual parcels were handled separately in the winery, with some wild fermentation and 10% whole bunch, before maturation in French oak puncheons and hogsheads, 25% new, for 14 to 16 months.
