2019 Foxglove Pinot Noir, Varner Wines

Los Alamos, Santa Barbara County, United States

Pacific Silk

Bright, supple and quietly seductive, this is Pinot Noir with that lovely Santa Barbara balance of perfume and poise. Wild strawberry, red cherry and raspberry rise first, followed by rose petal, a soft earthy note and a gentle hint of spice that gives the wine shape without weighing it down. The palate is silky and finely drawn, with juicy red fruit, fresh acidity and a subtle savoury edge that keeps everything lifted and composed. There is generosity here, but it comes with elegance, finishing smooth, bright and beautifully easy to return to.

For when: the candles are lit, the food is simple, and the red needs grace rather than muscle.
Pairs with: duck, roast chicken, mushroom dishes, or grilled salmon with herbs.
If this wine were a place: a sandy coastal slope with cool Pacific air drifting in just before sunset.

Foxglove is the more approachable label from Bob and Jim Varner, created to offer everyday California wines with real care and character behind them. This Pinot Noir comes from the Los Alamos District in Santa Barbara County, where sandy loam soils and close proximity to the Pacific help shape wines of fragrance, freshness and finesse. Made entirely from Pinot Noir, with the wine raised mostly in stainless steel and only a small portion in puncheons, it keeps that bright, elegant, marine-influenced style beautifully intact.

Varner Wines is the long-running California project of twin brothers Jim and Bob Varner, who began planting vines in 1980 and built their reputation on finely tuned, site-driven Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Their name became closely associated with the cool, elevated conditions of the Santa Cruz Mountains, where a low-intervention approach in both vineyard and cellar helped shape wines of precision, freshness and quiet depth. Alongside the more sought-after Varner bottlings, the brothers also created the Foxglove label to offer a more open, approachable expression of the same philosophy, wines made with care, clarity and a strong sense of place, but with everyday drinkability at their heart.
