2013 Graveyard Shiraz, Brokenwood

Hunter Valley, Australia

This is one of Australia’s great single-vineyard Shiraz wines, now showing the beauty of maturity. Red cherry, plum and blackberry lead the nose, followed by olive, cinnamon, clove, cedar, mocha, leather and a subtle earthy warmth. It has the concentration expected from Graveyard, but the Hunter Valley keeps the style elegant, savoury and medium-bodied rather than heavy.

On the palate, it is supple, layered and beautifully composed, with red and dark fruit carried by fine tannins, juicy acidity and a long, dusty finish. Time in bottle has softened the structure and brought out more savoury complexity, while the fruit still feels fresh and alive. A superb mature Australian Shiraz for collectors, Hunter Valley lovers and anyone who wants power delivered with restraint.

For when
A serious dinner needs mature Shiraz with quiet authority.

Pairs with
Roast lamb, venison, ribeye, slow-braised beef, duck breast, mushroom pie, chargrilled aubergine, hard cheeses or peppered kangaroo fillet.

Graveyard is Brokenwood’s flagship vineyard and one of the defining names of Hunter Valley Shiraz. Originally planted in 1968, the site is known for heavy clay soils, low yields and intensely flavoured fruit. First bottled as a single-vineyard Shiraz in 1983, it has become a benchmark for Australian red wine: age-worthy, savoury, structured and unmistakably tied to place.

Brokenwood is one of the great names of the Hunter Valley, founded in 1970 by James Halliday, John Beeston and Tony Albert. What began as a weekend project in Pokolbin grew into one of Australia’s most respected wineries, known for combining regional heritage with a restless search for exceptional vineyard sites.

The estate’s reputation rests especially on two Hunter Valley icons: ILR Reserve Semillon and Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz. Both show the region’s ability to produce wines of elegance, longevity and unmistakable character. Brokenwood has also built a strong wider portfolio, working with premium sites beyond the Hunter while keeping its home region at the heart of the story.

Graveyard Vineyard remains the cornerstone of Brokenwood’s red-wine identity. Its heavy clay soils, low yields and mature Shiraz vines give wines with concentration, savoury depth and fine structure rather than simple weight. For customers, Brokenwood offers serious Australian pedigree: trusted, collectable and built around wines that age with real grace.

The 2013 Graveyard Shiraz is 100% Shiraz from Brokenwood’s Graveyard Vineyard in the Hunter Valley. The 15-hectare site was originally planted in 1968 and is known for heavy clay soils that naturally restrict yields and produce fruit with depth, intensity and fine structure.

The wine was matured in French oak, with the oak sitting quietly behind the fruit rather than dominating the style. The 2013 vintage shows the classic Graveyard profile: medium-bodied, elegant and supple, with red cherry, plum, savoury spice, olive and cedar complexity. Alcohol is 13.5%, and the wine is sealed under screwcap.
