2011 Meres Pinot Noir, Kooyong
Mornington Peninsula, Australia
Kooyong’s 2011 Meres Pinot Noir is mature Mornington Peninsula Pinot in a beautifully silken phase. Red cherry, redcurrant, raspberry, rose petal and dried herbs lead the way, with savoury notes of underbrush, spice and a gentle earthy complexity now settling into the glass. It feels alive, elegant and quietly perfumed rather than loud.
On the palate, the years have softened the tannins into something fine and graceful, while the wine still carries a lovely line of freshness. Expect red fruit, tea leaf, forest floor and a subtle mineral edge, finishing with poise, perfume and a calm sense of maturity. Drink now, ideally with a little air and a glass that lets the aromatics open.
For when
A relaxed dinner deserves a Pinot with age, charm and quiet confidence.
Pairs with
Roast duck, mushroom risotto, pork loin, grilled salmon, game birds, lentils with herbs, beetroot tart or soft washed-rind cheeses.
Kooyong is one of the Mornington Peninsula’s benchmark Pinot Noir and Chardonnay estates, based in Tuerong on distinctive sedimentary soils. The Meres block sits on the eastern boundary of the vineyard, flanked by dams, with exposure that naturally limits vigour and builds aromatic intensity. Under the Gjergja family, Kooyong has become known for detailed single-block wines that show the subtle differences of site with precision, restraint and real class.
