2000 Langi Shiraz, Mount Langi Ghiran
Grampians, Australia
The Last Ember of the Mountain
This is mature Langi at its most quietly smouldering: dark-fruited, savoury, peppered and now fully in its autumnal register. Blackberry, plum, black cherry and raspberry sit alongside cedar, dried herbs, cocoa, leather, earth and that unmistakable Grampians spice. It still has the cool-climate lift that defines the estate, but time has softened the edges and drawn the fruit into something more contemplative.
The palate is medium to full-bodied rather than heavy, with mellow red and black fruit, soft pepper, chocolate, fine tannins and a savoury, gently cedary finish. There is a lovely sense of old-vine poise here: mature berry fruit, spice, menthol, dried flowers and polished structure. A wine for those who want old Shiraz with elegance, not excess.
For when you want the glow of old Shiraz without the weight of old Shiraz.
Pairs with roast lamb, braised beef cheek, venison pie, mushroom and lentil ragù, aged cheddar, or slow-cooked shoulder with rosemary.
If this wine were… a fire, it would be the last deep-red embers in a stone hearth after everyone else has gone to bed.
Mount Langi Ghiran is one of Australia’s defining cool-climate Shiraz estates, a benchmark producer in Victoria’s Grampians whose wines helped reshape the world’s view of Australian Shiraz. At the heart of that story is Trevor Mast, the legendary winemaker and visionary who saw the magic in this remote mountain site and became the inspiration behind Langi Shiraz as we know it. His legacy lives in wines of pepper, perfume, savoury depth and remarkable longevity, with Langi Shiraz standing as the estate’s great signature.
