Gift box of 2020 Viña Ardanza Reserva, La Rioja Alta

Rioja Alta, Rioja, Spain

Give a classic Rioja this Christmas with a gift-boxed bottle of Viña Ardanza Reserva. From one of Spain’s most respected wine estates, this is a thoughtful present for the wine lover in the family, a generous gift for a festive host or a bottle to bring everyone together over dinner. Its combination of beautifully developed flavour, reassuring pedigree and further ageing potential makes it equally appealing to someone discovering fine Rioja and a collector who already knows its charms.

Fragrant, poised and unmistakably classical, the 2020 Viña Ardanza layers ripe cherry, redcurrant and blueberry with the seductive spice of carefully judged American oak. Cedar, clove and nutmeg unfold alongside cocoa and toasted wood, while a subtle balsamic freshness adds lift to the generous fruit. The aromas become increasingly intricate with air, revealing a wine whose richness is matched by finesse.

The palate is supple and beautifully proportioned, with rounded fruit supported by fine, gently gripping tannins and bright acidity. There is satisfying depth through the middle, yet the wine remains graceful, carrying its cherry fruit and savoury spice into a long, harmonious finish. Already rewarding with a little time in a decanter, it also has the balance to develop further complexity in the cellar. A compelling bottle for the festive table, offering the comforting familiarity of great Rioja with plenty of detail to hold your attention.

For when: You want a Christmas gift that earns its place at the best seat at the table.

Pairs with: Pair with rosemary-roasted lamb, rib of beef with Yorkshire pudding, roast turkey with chestnut stuffing, braised venison, mushroom Wellington or mature Manchego.

Viña Ardanza brings together two complementary sides of Rioja: the structure and freshness of Tempranillo from Rioja Alta and the fragrance and generosity of Garnacha from La Pedriza in Rioja Oriental. That partnership is central to its enduring appeal, creating a Reserva with both immediate charm and the depth to age. The gift box makes this celebrated wine an especially thoughtful choice for Christmas, anniversaries and heartfelt thank-yous.

La Rioja Alta was founded in 1890 by five Riojan and Basque families in Haro’s historic railway district. Its first president, Doña Saturnina García Cid y Gárate, helped establish a house that would become closely associated with traditionally styled Rioja. The merger with Alfredo Ardanza’s winery in 1904 marked another important stage in its history.

Estate vineyards across Rioja provide a varied palette for blending. For Viña Ardanza, mature Tempranillo vines in Fuenmayor and Cenicero are complemented by Garnacha from Tudelilla, where altitude and deep, stony soils help shape fragrant, concentrated fruit. Careful matching of grape variety and site underpins the wine’s balance.

Winemaker Julio Sáenz combines traditional ageing and manual racking with modern fruit selection and precise cellar control. The house maintains its own cooperage, giving it close oversight of the American oak barrels central to its style. Environmental initiatives include reducing vineyard treatments, conserving water and investing in renewable energy.

The 2020 combines 80% Tempranillo from La Cuesta in Fuenmayor and Montecillo in Cenicero, with 20% Garnacha from La Pedriza in Tudelilla. The Tempranillo vines were over 30 years old; the Garnacha vines were 17 years old, planted at 550 metres. Harvesting began by hand in late September, with Garnacha picked 20 days later.
Bunches were selected in the vineyard and transported under refrigeration before optical sorting at the winery. The destemmed grapes fermented in stainless steel, with alcoholic and malolactic fermentations proceeding naturally.
Selected lots entered American oak barrels in April 2021, with 20% new wood. Tempranillo matured for 36 months with six manual rackings, while Garnacha spent 30 months in barrel with five rackings. The varieties were then blended and bottled in November 2024.
