The 2022 Morgon Cuvée Classique from Domaine Jean Foillard exemplifies the purity and finesse that have made Foillard a benchmark producer in Beaujolais. Crafted from old-vine Gamay grown on the schist and granite-rich slopes of Villié-Morgon, this wine is a vibrant expression of its terroir.

In the glass, the nose is expressive, offering aromas of fresh raspberry and strawberry, complemented by floral notes and subtle hints of spice. On the palate, it is lively and refreshing, with a velvety texture and vibrant crushed summer fruit flavours. The well-integrated acidity and balanced tannins lead to a long, silky finish.

Jean and Agnès Foillard took over the Domaine from Jean’s father in 1980. It wasn’t long before their wines reached the cult-like status they enjoy today. Early on, Jean began to follow the teachings of Jules Chauvet, a traditionalist who defied everything that the more commercial brands were touting in the region. Jean and three other local vignerons, Marcel Lapierre, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Guy Breton, soon joined in on the movement. This Gang of Four, as christened by famous American importer Kermit Lynch, called for a return to the old practices of viticulture and vinification – starting with old vines, never using synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting late, rigorously sorting to remove all but the healthiest grapes, adding minimal doses of sulphur dioxide or none at all, and refusing both chaptalization and filtration.
The wines are a true and natural expression of Morgon. With access to the very best vineyards in one of the most renowned areas of the appellation, the ‘Côtes du Py’, and 60-year-old vines, Jean’s wines are full of life and character and show incredible depth and purity

Jean Foillard adheres to natural viticulture and vinification techniques. The grapes are hand-harvested and undergo whole-cluster fermentation with indigenous yeasts. A cold carbonic maceration at 4–7 °C is employed, followed by ageing for 4 to 5 months in stainless steel tanks. No herbicides or pesticides are used, and minimal sulphur is added.
