2021 Yarra Valley Reserve Pinot Noir, Yering Station
Yarra Valley, Australia
Silk at Dusk
Perfumed, poised and quietly powerful, this is Pinot Noir with real grace and real presence. Dark cherry, wild strawberry and black raspberry rise first, followed by rose petal, warm spice and a gentle earthy note that gives the wine its shape and seriousness. The palate is supple and flowing, with silky tannins, fine acidity and a deeper register of dark fruit that brings both richness and restraint. There is generosity here, but it never feels heavy, only polished, layered and beautifully composed, with a long finish that lingers on spice, fruit and quiet finesse.
For when: the table is set, the candles are lit, and the red needs elegance rather than noise.
Pairs with: duck, roast chicken, wild mushrooms, or salmon with herbs and butter.
If this wine were a place: a cool Yarra hillside at dusk, with soft light, red leaves and the air holding its breath.
Yering Station is one of the Yarra Valley’s great historic estates, with a winemaking story that reaches back to 1838. The Reserve Pinot Noir sits at the top of the range, produced only in the strongest years from the finest parcels, and the estate describes it as its flagship Pinot Noir. In the 2021 vintage, Yering Station highlighted the season’s wet start and later praised the finished wine for its “presence and poise,” which feels exactly right for a bottle of this calibre.
