2021 Shiraz 'Watervale Single Vineyard', Jim Barry

Clare Valley, Australia

Clare Valley Midnight

Dark, vivid and beautifully composed, the 2021 Watervale Single Vineyard Shiraz captures the cool elegance of Clare Valley fruit. In the glass, it shows a deep ruby hue, opening with aromas of blackberry, dark berry compote and bramble, lifted by a flicker of spice and subtle floral notes. The palate is juicy and energetic, black fruit flowing across supple, rounded tannins with a gentle thread of pepper and savoury depth. Fresh acidity keeps the wine light on its feet, giving clarity and balance to the brooding fruit through to a long, polished finish.

For when: grilled meats and long conversations are on the table.
Pairs with: lamb cutlets, pepper-crusted steak or smoky barbecue.
If this wine were a moment: dusk over rolling vineyards, warm air cooling as the stars begin to appear.

This single-vineyard Shiraz comes from the historic Florita Vineyard in Watervale, where vines grow on a gentle north-west facing slope of loam over limestone. The Clare Valley’s dramatic day-to-night temperature shifts preserve freshness and aromatic lift, giving the wine its signature elegance. Fermented in stainless steel with a portion of whole berries and whole bunch fruit for complexity, then matured for 12 months in French oak, the result is a Shiraz that balances purity, structure and finesse — a hallmark of the meticulous approach of Jim Barry Wines, one of Clare Valley’s most respected family estates.

Certain names resonate strongly within Australian wine history and Jim Barry is one of them. It was Jim Barry’s drive that helped shape South Australia’s Clare Valley as a benchmark producer of world class Riesling and cemented it as one of Australia’s premier wine regions. Jim was the first qualified winemaker in the Clare Valley, graduating with a degree in oenology from the prestigious Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1947. Founded in 1959, Jim Barry Wines is still family owned, with three generations of Roseworthy graduates. Jim’s son Peter became managing director in 1985 and today Peter’s children Tom, Sam and Olivia are the winemaker, commercial manager and brand ambassador respectively. Voted ‘2020 Winery of the Year' at the Halliday Wine Companion Awards, they produce highly acclaimed, award-winning wines.

The grapes were destemmed, carefully sorted and gently crushed allowing a small percentage of whole berries to pass through. Fermentation occurred in stainless steel fermenters with heading down boards, which submerged the skins in the fermenting must to gently extract colour, flavour and tannins. Pump-overs were conducted twice per day, with a rack and return each day. Fermentation lasted seven to nine days before being pressed; all the pressings were returned to the free-run wine. One third of the grapes were co-fermented with 15% of whole bunch fruit to impart complexity and an aromatic lift to the wine. Malolactic conversion occurred in tank before the wine was racked to French oak for 12 months maturation.
