2019 Jack Mann Cabernet Sauvignon, Houghton
Frankland River, Great Southern, Australia
Iron Crown
This is one of Western Australia’s great Cabernet icons, made with the depth, polish and quiet authority that the Jack Mann name deserves. From Frankland River, it opens with blackcurrant, cassis, ripe plum and black olive, then moves into violet, tobacco, mint, dark chocolate, cedar, graphite and a savoury edge of dried herbs.
The palate is powerful but composed, with dense black fruit, firm fine-grained tannins and a long, structured finish. There is richness, but also control: Cabernet muscle shaped by Frankland River freshness, ironstone depth and careful oak. It is serious, ageworthy and already deeply impressive, though a decant will help unlock its darker fruit, spice and mineral detail.
For when you want Australian Cabernet with stature, depth and cellar-door gravitas.
Pairs with roast beef, lamb rack, venison, ribeye steak, slow-cooked short rib, mushroom Wellington, aged cheddar, or hard sheep’s cheese.
If this wine were… a landmark, it would be a weathered ironstone tower on a hill, built to last.
Houghton is one of Western Australia’s most historic wine names, with more than 180 years of winemaking heritage and a reputation built on classic regional wines of clarity, structure and longevity. Jack Mann Cabernet Sauvignon sits at the top of that story, named in honour of the legendary Houghton winemaker who completed 51 consecutive vintages and became one of the defining figures of Western Australian wine. The wine was first named for him in 1994 and remains Houghton’s great Cabernet statement, sourced from Frankland River and made to show intensity, elegance, regional character and serious ageing potential.
