MV, K'Avshiri White, Vachnadziani Winery
Kakheti, Georgia
This is the kind of white that refuses to sit quietly in the corner. A multi-vintage, multi-varietal Georgian blend built from Kavshiri, Krakhuna, Mtsvane, Rkatsiteli, Tsitska and Tsolikouri, it feels layered, textured and wonderfully hard to define in a single sentence. The nose brings white stone fruit, peach and blossom, with a soft citrus lift and a faint orange-skin edge that hints at something a little more intriguing beneath the surface. On the palate, it is dry but far from lean, rich in texture, long in flavour, and threaded with apricot, passion fruit and a subtle grip that gives the wine shape and personality.
Part of that character comes from qvevri, the traditional Georgian clay vessels buried underground and used for fermenting and ageing wine, which bring a gentle tannic grip, savoury depth and an extra sense of place. Here, that influence adds a whisper of spice, a faint earthy note and a beautifully textured finish, making the wine feel both exotic and composed at once. Fresh, complex and slightly offbeat, this is a white that keeps unfolding in the glass.
The wine is a rare multi-vintage assemblage, blending 2023, 2022, 2021 and 2017, with part of the wine fermented in qvevri and a portion also seeing older oak.
For when: the food is generous, the conversation is lively, and you want a white with a bit more soul than usual.
Pairs with: grilled fish, roast chicken, spiced vegetable dishes, hard cheeses, or a proper Georgian feast.
K’AVSHIRI is a collaboration between Robert Joseph and Vladimer Kublashvili, built around the idea of making a wine that blends not just grapes, but regions, techniques and vintages, all while staying rooted in Georgia’s winemaking traditions. That spirit comes through clearly here. It is not trying to be neat or obvious. It is trying to be interesting, expressive and distinctly Georgian, and it succeeds beautifully.
