2025 Picpoul de Pinet, Domaine de Cantagrils
Picpoul de Pinet, Languedoc-Roussillon, France
Sea Breeze in a Glass
Bright, zesty and gloriously refreshing, this is Picpoul doing exactly what it does best. Lemon, grapefruit and green apple lead the way, followed by a soft white-flower note and that lovely briny, citrus-skin freshness that makes the wine feel instantly appetising. The palate is crisp and finely drawn, with lively acidity, a cool mineral thread and a clean, mouthwatering finish that feels made for sunshine and seafood. There is charm here from the first sip, but also a lovely sense of tension and clarity that keeps everything bright, precise and seriously drinkable.
For when: oysters are ordered, the table is outside, and the first bottle disappears before you notice.
Pairs with: shellfish, grilled prawns, sea bass, or anything with lemon, salt and sunshine.
If this wine were a place: a Mediterranean shoreline at midday, with bright light on the water and a sea breeze cutting through the heat.
Domaine de Cantagrils is based close to the Mediterranean in the Picpoul de Pinet appellation, where coastal influence plays a defining role in the wines. The vineyards sit on a mix of clay, chalky soils and gravel, helping to preserve freshness while bringing shape and mineral detail to the wine. That meeting of warm southern light and maritime coolness is exactly what gives Picpoul its appeal here, crisp, saline and beautifully tuned for the table.
