2024 Rkatsiteli, Vachnadziani Winery

Kakheti, Georgia

The Kakheti Golden Thread

This is Georgian white wine with brightness, heritage and a clean citrus snap. Made from 100% Rkatsiteli grown in Kakheti, it opens with lemon, green apple, pear and yellow fruit, before tropical notes, white flowers and a faint white pepper lift begin to appear. It is pale straw in colour, unoaked and made to preserve the fresh, aromatic character of the grape.

The palate is crisp, lively and refreshing, with citrus peel, orchard fruit and a clean, pithy finish. There is a gentle aromatic softness, but the real pleasure is in its clarity and easy drinkability. It feels ancient and modern at once, like one of Georgia’s oldest grapes given a bright, contemporary polish.

For when you want a white wine with history, freshness and a proper Georgian accent.
Pairs with grilled fish, prawns, goat’s cheese salad, mussels in garlic sauce, khachapuri, lemon chicken, mezze, or crisp vegetable dishes.
If this wine were… a thread, it would be gold running through Kakheti stone, bright with citrus and catching the morning light.

Vachnadziani Winery is one of Georgia’s historic producers, established in 1953 in the village of Vachnadziani in Gurjaani, Kakheti. The estate works with indigenous Georgian varieties and aims to preserve the country’s ancient wine culture while using modern investment in vineyards and cellars. Rkatsiteli is one of Georgia’s most important native grapes, with archaeological evidence of grape seeds found in ancient clay vessels helping underline the country’s status as the cradle of wine.

Georgia is considered to be the ‘cradle of wine’, as 8,000 year-old indigenous Rkatsiteli grape seeds have been found in clay vessels. Vachnadziani was established in 1953 and is one of the oldest wineries in Georgia. During the Soviet years the vineyard fell into disrepair, but has since received significant investment. The aim is to preserve ancient wine culture while combining it with modern technology. With over 1,000 hectares of vineyard across Kakheti in eastern Georgia and Imereti, Racha and Lechkhumi in the west, Vachnadziani cultivates 25 vine varieties, the majority of which are indigenous, showcasing the character of this historic winemaking region.

The grapes were carefully selected. Fermentation took place at 16°C in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for two weeks. The wine was made in an unoaked style to preserve the varietal characteristics of the Rkatsiteli variety.
