2024 Protea Chenin Blanc, Anthonij Rupert Wyne

Western Cape, South Africa

Cape Silk

Bright, rounded and quietly expressive, this is Chenin Blanc with a lovely sense of ease and polish. Apricot, peach and nectarine rise first, followed by Golden Delicious apple, citrus peel and a soft chamomile note that gives the wine a little extra charm. The palate is full and supple, with ripe stone fruit, fresh acidity and a light chalky grip that keeps everything focused and refreshing. There is texture here, certainly, but it never feels heavy, only balanced, composed and wonderfully drinkable.

For when: lunch is light, the sun is out, and the first glass disappears without warning.
Pairs with: grilled vegetables, goat’s cheese, roast chicken, or simple fish dishes with lemon and herbs.
If this wine were a place: a bright Cape afternoon with warm light, cool shade and something delicious just about to be served.

The Protea range sits within the Anthonij Rupert portfolio and is made to capture a fresher, more approachable expression of the Western Cape. For the 2024 Chenin Blanc, the fruit comes from decomposed granite and shale soils in the Western Cape, and the wine spent a short period on lees, which helps explain its lovely mix of generosity, freshness and gentle texture.

Anthonij Rupert Wyne was founded on the farm, L`Ormarins in Franschhoek. Originally owned by the late Anthonij Rupert, who passed away in 2001, the farm was eventually taken over by his brother Johann Rupert in 2003 and the brand named after him. It was Johann Rupert who constructed a state-of-the-art winemaking facility, catapulting the farm into a prestigious wine estate and the beginnings of what is now a sprawling enterprise.

The focus is on terroir-specific wines and therefore it would seem obvious that the brand is made up of an impressive portfolio of farms representing the best in grape-producing locations. The portfolio is made up of L`Ormarins situated in Franschhoek, Rooderust in Darling, Riebeeksrivier in the Swartland and Altima in isolated Elandskloof. Individually each site offers optimum varietal-specific growing conditions, allowing Anthonij Rupert Wyne to adhere to the requirements of their different brands.

The grapes were handpicked during the early morning hours at optimal ripeness and transported to the cellar. The fruit was both de-stemmed and whole bunch pressed and the juice was settled overnight. All parcels were kept separate and racked into fermentation with carefully selected yeast strain cultures. The wine spent time on the lees in stainless steel tanks, before being blended and bottled.
