2024 Grüner Veltliner Langenlois, Weingut Weszeli
Langenlois, Kamptal, Austria
Loess Spark
This is Grüner Veltliner with crunch, clarity and that lovely Kamptal snap. From vineyards around Langenlois, it opens with green apple, pear, grapefruit and lemon pith, followed by white pepper, meadow herbs, subtle flowers and a clean chalky-mineral line. It is fresh and easy to enjoy.
The palate is dry, taut and lively, with juicy orchard fruit, citrus brightness and a gentle savoury spice running through the finish. There is a little roundness from the loess soils, but the overall feeling is crisp, elegant and wonderfully moreish. This is the kind of white that works before dinner, during dinner and very probably while deciding what to cook.
For when you want a white with snap, spice and effortless Austrian charm.
Pairs with schnitzel, asparagus, sushi, grilled prawns, roast chicken, goat’s cheese, pork belly, herby salads, or Thai-style vegetables.
If this wine were… a sound, it would be gravel crunching underfoot on the way to a long lunch.
Weingut Weszeli is based in Langenlois, in Austria’s Kamptal, where Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are the estate’s central focus. The winery’s roots go back to 1679, and today Davis Weszeli works with the Principle Terrafactum, placing vineyard life, biodiversity and soil expression at the heart of the wines. The 2024 Langenlois Grüner Veltliner comes from multiple gently sloping terraced plots planted between 1986 and 2015 at around 270 to 320 metres, with soils including metamorphic, igneous and sedimentary rock, especially calcareous loess.
