2024 Gaba do Xil Branco Godello O Barreiro, Telmo Rodríguez
Valdeorras, Galicia, Spain
Slate Salt
This is Galician Godello with precision, texture and a proper mountain-mineral pulse. From the O Barreiro vineyard in Valdeorras, it opens with pear, green apple, white peach and citrus peel, followed by white flowers, almond, fennel, wet stone and a clean saline edge. It is bright and fresh, but there is depth beneath the surface.
The palate is dry, rounded and finely textured, with orchard fruit and citrus carried by crisp acidity and a long, stony finish. Lees ageing adds a little creaminess and weight, while the absence of malolactic fermentation keeps the wine sharp, pure and energetic. A brilliant example of why Godello has become one of Spain’s most exciting white grapes.
For when you want white wine with freshness, texture and serious mineral character.
Pairs with grilled prawns, scallops, roast chicken, salt cod, octopus, asparagus risotto, goat’s cheese, or tortilla with aioli.
Telmo Rodríguez is one of the defining figures of modern Spanish wine, working with Pablo Eguzkiza to revive historic vineyards, native grapes and regional traditions across Spain. In Valdeorras, their Ladeiras do Xil project helped bring renewed attention to the steep, terraced landscapes of the Sil River valley. O Barreiro has been a true single-vineyard wine since 2021, made from estate fruit grown around Larouco, with Godello and other local grapes planted on clay and slate soils. The 2024 was fermented with native yeasts and matured on its lees, giving a wine that captures Valdeorras at its best: Atlantic freshness, continental tension, mineral depth and quiet precision.
