2023 Pouilly-Fumé Buisson Renard, Domaine Didier Dagueneau *Magnum*
Loire Valley, France
Flint & Silk
A rare Magnum bottling of this Dagueneau masterpiece.
Taut, luminous and quietly profound, Buisson Renard is Sauvignon Blanc with real gravity. The 2023 opens in layers, ripe citrus, white peach and green apple at first, then a cooler, more stony register of wet stone, fresh herbs and that unmistakable flinty smokiness that seems to hum through the wine rather than sit on top of it. There is intensity here, but nothing showy. Instead, it feels sculpted and precise, the fruit wrapped around a core of mineral tension that gives the wine both power and poise. The palate is beautifully controlled, bright and energetic on entry, then broader and more textural through the middle, finishing long, saline and almost chalk-dusted in its persistence.
For when: the food is elegant, the company matters, and the white needs to be every bit as memorable as the occasion.
Pairs with: turbot, scallops, lobster, goat’s cheese, or something simple and exquisite with citrus and herbs.
If this wine were a place: a high Loire hillside at first light, all cool stone, clean air and rising brightness.
Buisson Renard comes from a single parcel in Saint-Andelain, the highest village in Pouilly-Fumé, on a prized mix of clay and flint-rich silex soils that help give the wine its signature smoky minerality and tensile shape. Domaine Didier Dagueneau farms biodynamically and raises the wine in large barrels, a combination that gives Buisson Renard its rare balance of depth, texture and crystalline site expression. The estate remains one of the Loire’s great reference points for Sauvignon Blanc, and this cuvée is among its most compelling, a wine of both cerebral detail and quiet sensuality.
PLEASE NOTE: THIS WINE IS DUE IN AT END OF MAY 2026
