2023 Moutere Chardonnay 'Rosie's Block', Neudorf

Nelson, New Zealand

“Flint & Finesse”

This is Chardonnay that commands attention without ever raising its voice. The 2023 Rosie’s Block opens with a flicker of matchstick flint and manuka ash, smoky and intriguing, before revealing layers of lemon curd, white peach and subtle orchard fruit. The aromatics feel cool, poised and deliberate, drawing you in rather than overwhelming.

Across the palate, it flows seamlessly, textured yet precise. Wild ferment and full malolactic give depth and quiet creaminess, while ten months in mostly seasoned French oak provides structure without intrusion. Lees work adds a gentle savoury edge, framing the fruit rather than masking it. There is clarity here, and a beautifully tuned cool-climate freshness that keeps everything lifted. Long, intricate and sophisticated, it finishes with flint, citrus oil and a fine mineral line that lingers and invites another sip.

For when you want Chardonnay that balances intellect and indulgence.
Pairs with roast chicken, grilled turbot, mushroom risotto or anything with brown butter and thyme.
If this wine were a conversation, it would be thoughtful, layered and impossible to walk away from.

Producer
Neudorf was founded in 1978 by Tim and Judy Finn, pioneers of the Nelson wine scene and early champions of sustainable winegrowing in New Zealand. Now guided by their daughter Rosie alongside winemaker Todd Stevens and viticulturist Stef Brockley, the estate continues its uncompromising focus on organics and thoughtful farming. Rosie’s Block, purchased in 1999 and named after their daughter, is a north-facing, organically certified parcel of clay and gravel soils, dry farmed and hand harvested. With solar-powered operations and a commitment to minimal intervention, Neudorf crafts wines that marry precision, purity and a deep respect for place.

Founded by Tim and Judy Finn (now retired) in 1978 who were pioneers of the Nelson wine industry and Tim Finn was a founding member of Sustainable Winegrowing NZ.

The vineyard is dry-farmed organically on north facing Moutere gravels, and their ethos of minimal intervention extends into the winery.

Their daughter Rosie Finn carries on the family tradition in the role of Sales & Marketing/Director together with winemaker/GM Todd Stevens and viticulturalist Stef Brockley.

Neudorf is regarded as one of the country’s top small wineries with an enviable reputation for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

The focus is on sustainability with the winery run on solar power aided by the fact that Nelson has some of the longest sunshine hours in New Zealand. All estate owned blocks are organically certified and the old vines are dry farmed.
