2023 Moutere Chardonnay 'Home Block' , Neudorf
Nelson, New Zealand
"Timeless Allure"
This is Chardonnay of stature and quiet authority. The 2023 Home Block opens with oyster shell, toasted cashew and a whisper of gentle oak, layered over white peach, citrus oil and a touch of nori that speaks of clay and coastal air. The aromatics feel composed and intelligent, nothing rushed, everything in its right place.
On the palate, it moves in seamless waves. Silky and harmonious, yet anchored by Moutere clay structure, it balances power with poise. Wild fermentation and ten months in French oak, just 15 percent new, bring depth and subtle creaminess, while full natural malolactic knits the texture into something fluid and complete. There is pink pepper spice, savoury nuance and a mineral core that drives through to a long, composed finish. It feels classic yet exquisitely modern, restrained yet thrilling, like the breath before the beat drops.
Already expressing clarity and balance, but built for patience, this is a wine that will unfold beautifully in the cellar.
For when you want Chardonnay with history, presence and quiet confidence.
Pairs with lobster in brown butter, roast poultry, aged Comté or dishes with depth and precision.
If this wine were a moment, it would be that charged silence before applause, calm, assured and full of promise.
Producer
Neudorf was founded in 1978 by Tim and Judy Finn, pioneers of the Nelson wine scene and early champions of sustainable winegrowing in New Zealand. The Home Block vineyard, planted the same year, produced some of the first Chardonnay vines in the South Island and remains the spiritual heart of the estate. Organically cultivated, dry farmed, and hand harvested from Moutere clay and gravel soils, it delivers wines of depth and longevity. Today, Rosie Finn, alongside winemaker Todd Stevens and viticulturalist Stef Brockley, continues the family’s legacy, crafting precise, balanced wines that reflect their landscape with timeless elegance.
