2023 Malvasia, Edi Simčič
Goriška Brda, Slovenia
Adriatic Breeze
Aromatic, textured and quietly captivating, this is Malvasia with real poise and presence. Dried and fresh peach rise from the glass first, followed by apricot, a soft balsamic lift and a subtle mineral edge that keeps everything feeling bright and finely drawn. The palate is dry and robust, with stone fruit, savoury detail and a lovely saline thread running through the middle. There is generosity here, certainly, but it is shaped by freshness and structure, giving the wine a long, salty finish that feels both distinctive and deeply moreish.
For when: the table is full of seafood, olive oil and sunshine, and the white needs a little more character than usual.
Pairs with: grilled prawns, sea bass, creamy risotto, or dishes with herbs, lemon and salt.
If this wine were a place: a sunlit Adriatic hillside, where warm air, pale stone and sea breeze all meet.
Edi Simčič is one of Slovenia’s benchmark producers, a family estate in Goriška Brda known for wines that combine Mediterranean warmth with Alpine freshness and precision. Farming vineyards in Vipolže, Kozana and Fojana on the region’s distinctive opoka soils, the family has built its reputation on low yields, careful selection and a style that feels both traditional and finely tuned. Malvasia is among the varieties planted in their Potok vineyard in Kozana, and in their hands it becomes a wine of texture, salinity and beautifully defined place.
