2023 Grüner Veltliner Ried Loibenberg Smaragd, Weingut Knoll
Wachau, Austria
Stone Power
This is serious Wachau Grüner Veltliner from one of Austria’s most revered white-wine estates. From the great Loibenberg vineyard, it opens with ripe pear, yellow apple, white peach and citrus peel, then moves into white pepper, meadow herbs, yeast, wet stone and a savoury hint of miso. It has the weight and presence of Smaragd, but still carries itself with Knoll’s unmistakable precision.
The palate is broad, powerful and beautifully mineral, with ripe orchard fruit, grapefruit, pepper spice and a firm stony core. There is richness, but no heaviness. The wine expands through the middle, then tightens again into a long, fresh, quietly commanding finish. This is Grüner with depth, structure and proper ageing potential.
For when you want Grüner Veltliner with grandeur, spice and serious vineyard character.
Pairs with roast pork, schnitzel, smoked trout, scallops, asparagus, veal, chicken with herbs, mushroom dishes, or hard alpine cheese.
If this wine were… a texture, it would be warm stone dusted with white pepper.
Weingut Knoll is one of the defining names of the Wachau, based in Unterloiben and celebrated for clear, precise, mineral-rich Riesling and Grüner Veltliner from great terraces including Kellerberg, Schütt and Loibenberg. The family farms around 16 hectares, and the wines are known for structure, longevity and a deeply traditional sense of place. Loibenberg itself is one of the Wachau’s classic sites, with gneiss and loess-influenced parcels giving this Grüner both power and texture.
