2023 Chardonnay 'TH', Undurraga
Limari Valley, Chile
The Limestone Light of Limarí
This is Chardonnay shaped by sea air, desert light and a very particular patch of Chilean earth. From Quebrada Seca in the Limarí Valley, it opens with gorgeous fresh aromas of camomile, lemon, melon and pear, lifted by coastal minerality and a gentle savoury edge. There is a touch of toasted hazelnut too, giving the wine a little polish without dulling its brightness.
The palate is smooth and creamy, but beautifully held in check by fresh acidity. Delicate oak spice sits neatly behind the fruit, adding texture rather than weight, while the finish is elegant, saline and quietly persistent. This is not Chardonnay trying to shout in a big accent. It is precise, cool and luminous, with the kind of mineral snap that makes you immediately reach for a second glass.
For when you want Chardonnay with freshness, texture and a little Pacific breeze.
Pairs with roast chicken, grilled sea bass, crab linguine, scallops with lemon butter, creamy mushroom pasta, or a good fish pie.
If this wine were… a landscape, it would be morning light over pale limestone, with the ocean just close enough to taste in the air.
Undurraga is one of Chile’s historic great names, founded in 1885 and now recognised for combining scale, experience and genuine site-led ambition. The Terroir Hunter, or TH, range is its clearest statement of intent: a project dedicated to seeking out distinctive vineyard sites across Chile and letting individual terroirs take centre stage. This Chardonnay comes from a small 2.39-hectare Quebrada Seca vineyard on the western side of Limarí, planted to clone 548 and located around 21 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean. The area’s cool marine influence, limestone-rich soils and slow ripening conditions give the wine its freshness, precision and coastal mineral drive.
