2023 Çal Karasi Blanc de Noirs, Kuzubağ
Aegean Islands, Turkey
The White Flame of Çal
This is Turkish white wine with a wonderfully unexpected twist: a blanc de noirs made from the indigenous red grape Çal Karası. It opens with lime, lemon peel, citrus blossom and green apple, before thyme, white spice and a fine saline note begin to appear. It is pale, bright and quietly intriguing, with the sort of freshness that makes the glass feel instantly awake.
The palate is dry, light-bodied and zesty, with high acidity carrying citrus, herbs, mineral detail and a crisp, salty finish. There is no heaviness here, just clarity, lift and a clean Aegean snap. It is a brilliant bottle for anyone who wants white wine that feels fresh and familiar at first, then quietly reveals something much more distinctive.
For when you want a white wine with freshness, originality and a story at the table.
Pairs with grilled sea bass, prawns, calamari, feta salads, lemon chicken, courgette fritters, mezze, sushi, or anything with herbs, salt and citrus.
If this wine were… a breeze, it would be cool air moving across the Çal plateau, carrying lime zest, wild thyme and the smell of warm stone after sunset.
Kuzubağ Estate Winery was founded in 2007 by Salih Kuzu and Aslı Kuzu, a father and daughter team with roots in Çal, Denizli. The estate focuses on the region’s distinctive terroir and indigenous grapes, with vineyards planted in Turkey’s inner Aegean and a modern winery built at the heart of the property. Their work with varieties such as Çal Karası shows a clear mission: to take the local grapes of Denizli and give them a fresh, precise, contemporary voice.
