2022 Prelude Chardonnay, Leeuwin Estate
Margaret River, Australia
Margaret River Glow
Bright, layered and beautifully composed, this is Chardonnay with that lovely Margaret River balance of generosity and restraint. Lemon blossom, pear and fresh citrus rise first, followed by white peach, a flicker of chamomile and a gentle savoury note that gives the wine shape and quiet complexity. The palate is energetic and finely textured, with lime, orchard fruit and a soft creamy breadth running through the middle. There is real polish here, but the wine never loses its line, finishing fresh, elegant and subtly saline, with a lovely sense of lift from start to finish.
For when: the food is elegant, the afternoon is stretching out, and the white needs both charm and poise.
Pairs with: roast chicken, grilled prawns, creamy fish dishes, or mushroom risotto with herbs.
If this wine were a place: a sunlit Margaret River terrace, with citrus in the air and the ocean not far beyond the trees.
Leeuwin Estate is one of Margaret River’s benchmark producers, a family estate whose wines have helped define the region’s global reputation for Chardonnay. The Prelude range offers a more open, earlier-drinking expression than the iconic Art Series wines, but it still carries the estate’s hallmark precision and quiet sophistication. The 2022 vintage was described by Leeuwin as a particularly strong year, and the wine is made from 100% Chardonnay with fermentation in French oak, followed by maturation on lees to build texture and finesse.
