2022 Los Alamos Chardonnay, Chanin
Los Alamos, Santa Barbara County, United States
Golden Hour Tension
Open, textural and beautifully composed, this is Chardonnay with a slightly broader, more generous feel than some of Chanin’s more tightly wound bottlings, but never at the expense of precision. Citrus peel, ripe pear and white peach rise first, followed by a soft note of oatmeal, a flicker of tropical fruit and a cool mineral edge that keeps everything honest. The palate has a lovely sense of breadth through the middle, with orchard fruit, subtle creaminess and a fine saline thread carrying the wine forward. It feels polished and quietly luxurious, then tightens beautifully on the finish, leaving behind freshness, shape and a long, stony line. That mix of openness and control is exactly what makes it so compelling.
For when: the food is elegant, the conversation is flowing, and the white needs both charm and authority.
Pairs with: roast chicken, scallops, turbot, or creamy mushroom dishes with thyme and butter.
If this wine were a place: a late afternoon hillside above the Pacific, all warm light, cool air and clean lines.
Chanin Wine Company has built its reputation on finely tuned, site-led Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from some of California’s most characterful coastal vineyards, always with an emphasis on restraint, freshness and detail over sheer weight. Los Alamos comes from an older Santa Barbara County vineyard planted in the late 1960s, on sand and limestone soils, and in Chanin’s hands it becomes a wine of texture, lift and beautifully measured tension.
