2022 Bien Nacido Vineyard Chardonnay, Chanin

Santa Maria Valley, Central Coast, California, United States

Coastal Tension

Bright, sculpted and quietly thrilling, this is Chardonnay with real nerve beneath the polish. Lemon peel, white peach and ripe pear lead the way, followed by a cool flinty edge and a gentle creamy note that gives the wine breadth without softening its line. The palate is taut yet silky, carrying citrus, orchard fruit and a fine saline thread that keeps everything lifted and precise. There is depth here, certainly, but it arrives wrapped in restraint, finishing long, mineral and beautifully alive.

For when: the food is elegant, the mood is calm, and the white needs to do more than simply refresh.
Pairs with: scallops, roast chicken, turbot, or buttery mushroom dishes with herbs.
If this wine were a place: a cool Pacific hillside at first light, with clean air, pale stone and the sea somewhere just beyond view.

Chanin has built its reputation on finely tuned, site-driven wines from some of California’s most revered coastal vineyards, and Bien Nacido sits right at the heart of that story. The 2022 bottling comes from this iconic Santa Maria Valley site and has already drawn 95+ points from Vinous, a fitting nod to a Chardonnay that feels both deeply Californian and beautifully restrained.

Chanin Wine Company is one of Santa Barbara County’s benchmark producers for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, founded by Gavin Chanin with a clear focus on wines that speak honestly of vineyard, soil and climate. Working with some of the region’s oldest and most respected sites, Chanin has built a reputation for balanced, site-driven wines shaped by cool coastal winds, marine-based soils and a long growing season. The philosophy is straightforward but exacting: thoughtful farming, old vines where possible, and a restrained, traditional approach in the cellar that allows each vineyard to show its own character. The result is a range of wines defined by purity, freshness and finesse, California in sunlight, but never in excess.
