2020 Pinot Gris, Rockburn

Central Otago, New Zealand

Pale straw with glints of gold, this Pinot Gris is pure Central Otago charm - bright, aromatic and finely textured. The nose bursts with pear, white peach and honeysuckle, layered with hints of citrus zest and a whisper of spice. On the palate, it’s supple and mouth-filling, balancing ripe orchard fruit with a line of crystalline acidity and a gentle mineral thread. Juicy, fresh and beautifully poised, it finishes long, clean and quietly luxurious.

For when: the sun’s still up, the glasses are cold, and the playlist is soft and familiar.
Pairs with: Asian-inspired dishes, seafood pasta, or soft goat’s cheese.
If this wine were a mood, it’d be calm confidence with a twist of brightness.

Rockburn is one of Central Otago’s leading estates, crafting wines that capture the region’s vivid fruit and alpine purity. The fruit for this Pinot Gris is sourced from the Parkburn and Gibbston Valley vineyards, where cool nights and long, dry days yield fruit of striking intensity and balance. Fermented partly in stainless steel and partly in seasoned oak, the wine shows both freshness and texture, a hallmark of Rockburn’s precision-driven winemaking.

The vineyard is situated in Central Otago, a region with a climate similar to Burgundy. It’s known for the quality of its Pinot Noirs. Rockburn has two vineyard sites in Parkburn and Gibbston Valley. The Parkburn vineyards lie in the middle of Central Otago Block Mountain ranges, on an old, alluvial terrace, covered by a loam topsoil.

The juice from each parcel was fermented in stainless steel on its gross lees at temperatures of 15°C. This process helps to retain the wine’s aromatics and finesse. Winemaker Malcolm Rees-Francis stopped fermentation at each parcel’s perfect level of sugar and acidity balance. This is a crucial step in determining the final taste of the wine. After the fermentation process, the wine was then racked and blended. This step helps to clarify the wine and combine the flavours from different parcels.
