2019 Tiers Chardonnay, Petaluma
Adelaide Hills, Australia
Golden Icon
This is one of Australia’s great Chardonnay names, from the legendary Tiers Vineyard in the Piccadilly Valley. Deep, poised and beautifully layered, it opens with white peach, grilled lemon, fig and grapefruit, then moves into hazelnut, flint, smoky oak, citrus peel and a fine floral lift. It has richness, but it is carried with real precision.
The palate is powerful and refined, with ripe stone fruit, melon, grapefruit and savoury nutty depth wrapped around bright Adelaide Hills acidity. There is texture, breadth and oak polish, but everything stays focused. Now with bottle age, the wine is moving into a more complex place: creamy, smoky, mineral and long, with the kind of balance that makes top Australian Chardonnay so compelling.
For when you want Chardonnay with pedigree, depth and serious cool-climate class.
Pairs with roast chicken, scallops, lobster, crab linguine, pork belly, mushroom risotto, cauliflower cheese, or Comté.
If this wine were… a texture, it would be gold leaf over cool stone.
Petaluma is one of Australia’s modern classics, founded on the belief that the best wines come from matching the right grape variety to the right region. The Tiers Vineyard sits in the heart of Piccadilly Valley and was planted by Brian and Ann Croser in 1979, after Brian Croser identified the area as one of Australia’s finest places for Chardonnay. The vineyard is recognised as a pioneering site for cool-climate wine in South Australia, and the 2019 release shows exactly why: old-vine depth, long ripening, flinty complexity and precise Adelaide Hills freshness.
