2019 Foxglove Chardonnay, Varner Wines

Central Coast, California, United States

California, Unbuttoned

Bright, generous and wonderfully easy to like, this is Chardonnay with all the sunny California charm you want, but delivered with a fresher, more restrained touch. Pineapple, white peach and green apple lead the way, followed by lemon zest, a flicker of honeysuckle and a soft brioche note that adds just enough richness without weighing the wine down. The palate is smooth and fruit-driven, with lovely ripeness through the middle, but the finish stays clean and lively, giving the wine a sense of balance that makes it far more than a simple easy-drinker. Open, expressive and quietly polished, it is the kind of Chardonnay that disappears with surprising speed.

For when: roast chicken is on the table, the pace is relaxed, and the wine needs broad appeal without losing its edge.
Pairs with: fish pie, grilled salmon, creamy pasta, or simply a good wedge of cheese and something buttery.
If this wine were a place: a late afternoon on the Central Coast, where the sunshine is warm but the air still carries a cool breeze.

Foxglove is the more approachable label from Bob and Jim Varner, two brothers who built a strong reputation for finely tuned California Chardonnay. While the top Varner wines became known for precision and site expression, Foxglove was created to offer something more open, immediate and everyday, still made with real care, but built around drinkability and charm. Sourced from California’s Central Coast, this Chardonnay captures that spirit beautifully.

Varner Wines is the long-running California project of twin brothers Jim and Bob Varner, who began planting vines in 1980 and built their reputation on finely tuned, site-driven Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Their name became closely associated with the cool, elevated conditions of the Santa Cruz Mountains, where a low-intervention approach in both vineyard and cellar helped shape wines of precision, freshness and quiet depth. Alongside the more sought-after Varner bottlings, the brothers also created the Foxglove label to offer a more open, approachable expression of the same philosophy, wines made with care, clarity and a strong sense of place, but with everyday drinkability at their heart.
