2017 Chardonnay, Stonier
Mornington Peninsula, Australia
Golden Line
Huge quality for the price!
This is Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay with richness, freshness and a lovely savoury seam. It opens with ripe peach, apricot, lemon curd and juicy apple, followed by honeycomb, cashew, light butterscotch, citrus nougat and a little flinty brightness. There is generosity here, but it is not heavy. The cool maritime freshness keeps everything lifted and neatly framed.
The palate is creamy, vibrant and medium-bodied, with stone fruit, citrus, honeyed spice and subtle oak texture moving into a dry, refreshing finish. A little bottle age has helped the fruit, oak and lees character settle into a more harmonious place, giving the wine softness, polish and gentle savoury complexity. It is classic Stonier: Chardonnay with shape, brightness and quiet Mornington confidence.
For when you want Chardonnay with creaminess, citrus lift and proper cool-climate balance.
Pairs with roast chicken, scallops, crab linguine, pork belly, mushroom risotto, cauliflower cheese, or Comté.
If this wine were… a texture, it would be polished gold with a cool stone edge.
Stonier is one of the pioneering names of the Mornington Peninsula, founded by Brian Stonier in 1978 and long associated with fine Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the region’s cool maritime vineyards. The estate helped put Mornington Peninsula wine on the international stage, including major success for its Reserve Pinot Noir and Reserve Chardonnay around the turn of the millennium. The 2017 Chardonnay was sourced from vineyards across the Peninsula, fermented in French oak barriques and puncheons with 15% new oak, then matured for 10 months, with around half the wine going through malolactic fermentation for texture while the rest retained bright fruit purity.
