2014 Carpe Diem Chardonnay, Domaine Anderson
Mendocino County, California, United States
The Golden Hour Chardonnay
This is California Chardonnay with a cool-climate pulse, generous enough to charm, but never so loud that it loses its poise. From the fog-cooled Anderson Valley, the 2014 Carpe Diem opens with ripe apple, pear, lemon curd and white peach, wrapped in gentle notes of toasted almond, hazelnut, caramel and warm pastry. There is a lovely maturity now, the fruit turning softer and more golden, the oak nicely folded in, and the whole thing moving from youthful brightness into something rounder, nuttier and more quietly complex.
On the palate, it balances Californian fruit with a fresher, more Burgundian sense of restraint. Think baked apple, citrus peel, grilled peach, roasted nuts and a little saline snap on the finish. It was aged for 10 months in French oak, with only 15% new oak, which helps explain the subtle texture rather than an overtly buttery style.
For when: you want Chardonnay with a little age, a little polish and a lot of quiet confidence.
Pairs with: roast chicken, turbot with beurre blanc, crab, creamy mushroom dishes, grilled scallops or Comté.
If this wine were: a Californian sunset in a cashmere jumper, golden, relaxed and quietly expensive.
Carpe Diem was first produced in 2013 and sits within the Domaine Anderson story, a project focused on the cool, fog-influenced Anderson Valley in Mendocino County. The region’s proximity to the Pacific helps preserve acidity in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, giving the wines their freshness, lift and elegance rather than simple richness. This 2014 Chardonnay captures that balance beautifully, combining ripe Californian fruit, restrained oak and the crisp, coastal energy that makes Anderson Valley such a compelling home for Chardonnay.
