2025 Riesling L, Dr Loosen

Mosel, Germany

Slate Kiss

Juicy, feather-light and irresistibly fresh, this is Mosel Riesling built around pure drinking pleasure. Ripe peach and yellow cherry meet lemon, lime and a gentle floral lift, with the region’s slate soils bringing a cool mineral edge beneath the fruit. There is noticeable sweetness, but it feels bright rather than heavy, thanks to Riesling’s naturally energetic acidity.

On the palate, it is light, vibrant and wonderfully easy to drink, with peachy fruit, citrus freshness and a softly off-dry finish. At just 8.5% alcohol, it has an almost weightless character, while the touch of residual sweetness makes it particularly versatile with spicy food. This is an excellent introduction to the classic Mosel balance of fruit, sweetness and acidity, made by one of Germany’s best-known Riesling specialists.

For when: You want something light, chilled and dangerously easy to keep pouring.

Pairs with: Thai curries, Vietnamese salads, sushi, spicy prawns, pork belly, aromatic Asian dishes or salty soft cheeses.

Dr Loosen is one of the defining names of the Mosel, a region whose steep slate vineyards have become synonymous with Riesling. The Loosen family has grown grapes here for more than two centuries, and Ernst Loosen took charge of the estate in 1988. This regional Riesling draws fruit from various vineyards across the Mosel, giving an accessible introduction to the freshness, fruit and lively acidity that make the region so distinctive.

Dr Loosen is one of the most recognisable names in German Riesling and has played an important role in bringing the wines of the Mosel to an international audience. The estate has been in the same family for more than 200 years, with Ernst “Ernie” Loosen taking over in 1988.

His philosophy places the vineyard at the centre of the wine. The family inherited old, often ungrafted Riesling vines in some of the Middle Mosel’s most celebrated sites, and Ernst focused on reducing yields and improving vineyard management to give those sites greater clarity in the finished wines. Several of the estate vineyards hold the prestigious Grosse Lage classification.

Dr Loosen has been a member of the VDP, Germany’s influential association of leading wine estates, since 1993. The range stretches from approachable regional Rieslings such as this L bottling through to complex single-vineyard and long-aged wines.

For customers, Riesling L is the easy-going end of the Dr Loosen spectrum: recognisably Mosel, wonderfully refreshing and made to deliver immediate pleasure without losing the producer’s characteristic balance and precision.

The 2025 Riesling L is made from 100% Riesling sourced from a selection of vineyards among the slate slopes of the Mosel. The rocky slate vineyards absorb warmth during the day and release it gradually as temperatures fall, an important advantage in the region’s cool climate. Yields are controlled and picking dates are carefully chosen to retain Riesling’s natural freshness.

The 2025 growing season began with well-replenished soils and a cool start to spring, delaying budbreak. Warmer conditions later encouraged rapid growth and favourable flowering produced a strong, even fruit set. August was warm and dry, helping develop aromatic fruit, although significant rain during harvest demanded careful selection and reduced the final quantity.

Fermentation takes place in large temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks using inoculated yeasts. Rather than fermenting completely dry, the wine is tasted throughout fermentation and, once the desired balance and juiciness are reached, fermentation is stopped through chilling and filtration. This leaves some natural grape sugar in the finished wine. It is then held in stainless steel before sterile filtration and bottling.

Residual sugar is 43 g/L and alcohol is just 8.5%, giving the wine its distinctive combination of ripe peachy fruit, gentle sweetness and refreshing lemon-lime acidity. It is deliberately youthful, light and immediately enjoyable, with enough sweetness to tame chilli and spice while remaining crisp enough for a second glass.
