2025 Dr L Riesling Dry, Dr Loosen

Mosel, Germany

Slate Snap

Racy, aromatic and wonderfully clean, Dr L Dry captures the bright, mineral side of Mosel Riesling without overt sweetness. White peach, grapefruit and fresh lemon meet delicate blossom and a cool chalky note, with the region’s slate soils giving the wine a distinctly stony edge. It is youthful, energetic and immediately refreshing, with enough ripe fruit to keep the dry style inviting rather than severe.

The palate is crisp and juicy, with citrus and white peach carried by lively acidity into a fresh, steely finish. A small amount of residual sugar rounds the edges without making the wine taste sweet, while stainless-steel winemaking keeps everything pure and vibrant. This is exactly the sort of Riesling worth keeping chilled for seafood, lighter Asian dishes and uncomplicated drinking.

For when: The fridge needs something crisp, dry and genuinely refreshing.

Pairs with: Grilled prawns, sushi, smoked salmon, schnitzel, roast chicken, Thai salads, fresh goat’s cheese or lightly spiced dishes.

The fruit comes from vineyards spread across the steep slate slopes of the Mosel. These rocky soils absorb and store heat during the day, helping Riesling ripen in the region’s cool climate, while careful picking preserves the grape’s naturally bright acidity. The result is a regional wine that offers an accessible introduction to classic Mosel freshness and minerality.

Dr Loosen is one of the best-known names in German Riesling and has played an important role in bringing the wines of the Mosel to an international audience. The Loosen family has been growing grapes in the region for more than 220 years, with Ernst “Ernie” Loosen taking charge of the estate in 1988.

Ernst inherited an extraordinary collection of mature and often ungrafted Riesling vines in some of the Mosel’s most celebrated vineyards. Nine estate vineyards carry the prestigious Grosse Lage designation. His approach has centred on reducing yields, improving vineyard health and allowing differences in soil and site to come through clearly in the finished wines.

The winery has been a member of the VDP since 1993, placing it among Germany’s leading wine estates. Alongside its famous single-vineyard wines, Dr Loosen produces regional bottlings such as Dr L to offer a more accessible introduction to the estate.

For customers, Dr L Dry is particularly useful because it delivers real Mosel character in a straightforward dry style: bright fruit, lively acidity, slate-driven freshness and excellent versatility at the table.

The 2025 Dr L Riesling Dry is made from 100% Riesling sourced from various vineyards among the slate slopes of the Mosel. The rocky slate reflects sunlight towards the grapes while storing daytime warmth and slowly releasing it into the soil as temperatures fall. This helps fruit ripen evenly while maintaining the acidity that gives Mosel Riesling its characteristic energy.

The 2025 season began with well-replenished soils and a cool start to spring, which delayed budbreak. Warmer and more variable conditions later encouraged rapid growth, while favourable flowering produced a strong, uniform fruit set. August was warm and dry, giving aromatic, balanced fruit, although significant rain during harvest demanded careful selection and reduced final quantities.

Fermentation took place in large temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks using selected yeasts. After fermentation, the wine remained in stainless steel and was bottled in the early spring following vintage to retain maximum freshness. There is no oak ageing. The finished wine has 12% alcohol, 8.1 g/L residual sugar and is bottled under screwcap. Winemaking is overseen by Berni Schug and Ernst Loosen.

The result is dry, bright and easy to enjoy, with white peach and citrus giving way to chalky mineral notes and a crisp, steely finish. The modest residual sugar softens Riesling’s naturally lively acidity without introducing obvious sweetness, making this especially appealing as a refreshing aperitif or alongside seafood and lightly spiced food.
