2023 Chianti Classico, Castellare di Castellina

Chianti Classico, Tuscany, Italy

Bright, elegant and beautifully composed, the 2023 Chianti Classico from Castellare di Castellina is a perfect balance of heritage and modern finesse. Deep ruby in colour, it opens with expressive aromas of ripe cherry, wild strawberry and violet, underpinned by hints of tobacco, cedar and Tuscan herbs. The palate is pure and poised with juicy red fruit framed by fine, chalky tannins and vibrant acidity. Notes of redcurrant, spice and dried rose linger through a long, savoury finish that’s both graceful and grounded. It’s classic Chianti, lifted, aromatic and utterly drinkable, with that unmistakable Castellare precision and polish.

For when: the table’s set, the pasta’s al dente, and the conversation flows easily.
Pairs with: pappardelle al ragù, grilled lamb, or aged Pecorino.

Castellare di Castellina, founded in the 1970s in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, is one of Tuscany’s most admired estates, celebrated for its elegant, terroir-driven wines that honour the Sangiovese grape in its purest form. The vineyards, nestled around the medieval village of Castellina in Chianti, sit on limestone-rich soils at elevations of 350–400 metres, producing fruit of superb balance and aromatic intensity.

The 2023 vintage is made predominantly from Sangiovese (known locally as Sangioveto) with a touch of native Canaiolo, fermented in stainless steel to preserve freshness, then aged for around 12 months in French oak barrels and traditional casks. The result is quintessential Castellare, a wine that bridges tradition and modernity, combining the perfume and purity of old-world Chianti with the finesse and texture of contemporary craftsmanship.

Set among the rolling hills and cypress-lined ridges of Castellina in Chianti, Castellare di Castellina stands as one of Tuscany’s most respected and enduring estates, a benchmark for elegance, authenticity, and the purest expression of Sangiovese. Founded in the late 1970s by Paolo Panerai, Castellare was born from the merger of five small farms, united under a single vision: to craft wines that marry the grace of traditional Chianti with the precision of modern winemaking.

The estate spans around 80 hectares, half of which are under vine, planted on classic Galestro and Alberese soils at elevations of 350–400 metres above sea level. These high-altitude conditions, combined with the cool night air of the Chianti hills, produce grapes of exceptional aromatic freshness and natural acidity, the foundation of Castellare’s elegant, ageworthy style.

Winemaking at Castellare blends innovation with deep respect for heritage. Sangiovese, here in its finest local clone, Sangioveto, forms the heart of the range, supported by traditional varieties such as Canaiolo and, in certain cuvées, small proportions of international grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel to preserve purity, followed by careful maturation in French oak barrels and large casks to achieve balance and finesse.

Castellare’s wines, from its refined Chianti Classico to the celebrated I Sodi di San Niccolò, one of Tuscany’s great icons, are defined by clarity, precision and a sense of place. Each bottle tells the story of Chianti’s unique hillsides, where ancient vineyards, wild herbs and birdsong create an atmosphere of quiet magic.

In keeping with this spirit, every Castellare label features a bird native to the region, symbolising the estate’s commitment to biodiversity and harmony with nature. Today, Castellare di Castellina remains a timeless reference for the region, a house where tradition, elegance and environmental respect live side by side in every glass.
