2021 Brunello di Montalcino Madonna delle Grazie, Il Marroneto
Tuscany, Italy
A perfect-score Brunello from one of Montalcino’s most revered vineyards.
From one of the most revered sites in all of Montalcino, this single-vineyard Brunello captures Sangiovese at its most hauntingly beautiful. The nose is intensely perfumed with wild cherry, rose petal and blood orange, layered with hints of cypress, crushed herbs and delicate spice. On the palate, it is both powerful and impossibly refined, vibrant red fruit carried by silky tannins and electric acidity. Mineral, precise and endlessly complex, it unfolds slowly before finishing long with savoury depth and remarkable elegance.
For when: the bottle deserves a quiet table and full attention.
Pairs with: bistecca alla fiorentina, truffle dishes or aged pecorino.
If this wine were a place: the chapel vineyard above Montalcino at sunset.
The Wine
Madonna delle Grazie is the jewel of Il Marroneto, a tiny vineyard beside a historic chapel just outside Montalcino. The site’s altitude and galestro soils produce Brunello of exceptional perfume and finesse. The 2021 vintage is a wine of extraordinary focus and balance, showing seamless texture and refined tannins shaped by long ageing in large oak botti. Only around 9,000 bottles were produced, making this one of the most limited and collectable Brunellos in the world.
