2021 Brunello di Montalcino, Il Marroneto

Tuscany, Italy

The Purest Brunello

A Brunello that captures the elegance and transparency that Il Marroneto is famous for. The nose opens with vivid aromas of wild cherry, redcurrant and rose petal, lifted by hints of orange peel, dried herbs and delicate spice. On the palate, it is beautifully poised, bright red fruit wrapped in silky tannins and vibrant acidity. Subtle notes of earth, tea leaf and crushed stone add depth, carrying through to a long, refined finish that feels both graceful and quietly powerful.

For when: Brunello deserves centre stage.
Pairs with: slow roasted lamb, wild mushroom dishes or aged pecorino.
If this wine were a place: the cool stone streets of Montalcino at dusk.

The Wine

Crafted from vineyards surrounding the Il Marroneto estate just north of the town of Montalcino, this Brunello reflects the estate’s signature style, purity, finesse and longevity. Fermented with native yeasts and aged in large Slavonian oak casks, the wine preserves the transparency and aromatic lift of Sangiovese rather than masking it with heavy oak. The 2021 vintage is widely regarded as one of the finest in recent years, delivering Brunello with exceptional balance, perfume and ageing potential.

Founded in 1974 by Giuseppe Mori, Il Marroneto has become one of the most revered estates in Montalcino, celebrated for Brunello that emphasises purity, elegance and a profound sense of place. The estate sits just north of the town of Montalcino at a relatively high altitude, where cooler conditions and rocky galestro soils allow Sangiovese to ripen slowly, producing wines of remarkable perfume, structure and longevity. From the beginning, the philosophy has been simple: meticulous vineyard work, traditional winemaking and minimal intervention, allowing the character of the vintage and the vineyard to speak clearly.

Today, the estate is run by Alessandro Mori, Giuseppe’s son, whose careful stewardship has elevated Il Marroneto to cult status among collectors and sommeliers. Fermentations are carried out with native yeasts and ageing takes place in large Slavonian oak casks, preserving the transparency and finesse of the fruit rather than masking it with oak. The estate’s wines, particularly the celebrated Madonna delle Grazie, are widely regarded as some of the most elegant and age-worthy Brunellos produced, combining haunting aromatics, precision and extraordinary longevity.
