2020 Brunello di Montalcino Madonna delle Grazie Riserva, Il Marroneto *Magnum*
Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy
The Unicorn Brunello
Some wines are rare. Some wines are legendary. This is both.
From the tiny Madonna delle Grazie vineyard, perched beside the Il Marroneto cellar just outside Montalcino, this Riserva represents one of the purest expressions of Sangiovese ever produced. The nose unfolds slowly with wild cherry, blood orange and rose petal, layered with crushed herbs, graphite and delicate spice. On the palate, it is both powerful and weightless, vivid red fruit wrapped in silky tannins and electric acidity. The wine builds with quiet intensity, finishing long, mineral and hauntingly elegant.
This is Brunello at its most ethereal.
For when: the bottle should feel like an event.
Pairs with: bistecca alla fiorentina, truffle dishes or slow roasted lamb.
If this wine were a place: sunset over the hills of Montalcino.
The Wine
Madonna delle Grazie is the crown jewel of Il Marroneto, a tiny vineyard planted beside a small chapel overlooking the estate. The site’s altitude and rocky galestro soils produce Brunello of extraordinary perfume, finesse and longevity. The 2020 Riserva is the first produced since 2013, released only in exceptional vintages.
Critics were unanimous. The wine received perfect 100-point scores, including from Monica Larner at Wine Advocate, placing it among the most celebrated Brunellos of the modern era.
Production is microscopic. Only around 1,000 magnums were bottled for the entire world, making this large-format release exceptionally rare. Magnums age more slowly and gracefully, allowing the wine to develop even greater complexity over decades.
In short, this is not simply great Brunello.
It is one of the most collectable Sangiovese wines ever released.
