2022 Rioja ‘Hado’, Bodegas Y Viñedos Pujanza

Rioja, Spain

Bright and expressive from the first pour, Hado opens with fresh cherry, raspberry and red plum, lifted by rose petals and violet. Cinnamon, cedar and a restrained touch of toast sit quietly behind the fruit, giving the wine polish without dulling its energetic Rioja Alavesa character.

The palate is generous but beautifully controlled, with juicy Tempranillo fruit, lively acidity and smooth, finely shaped tannins. French oak brings gentle spice rather than sweetness, while the high-altitude vineyards keep everything fresh and precise. Full-flavoured yet easy to drink, this is a smart way into serious, vineyard-focused Rioja and a bottle that will disappear quickly at the table.

For when Tapas turns into dinner, and nobody is watching the clock.

Pairs with Lamb chops, chorizo, charred pork, beef burgers, tomato-braised dishes or mature Manchego.

Hado is the gateway into Carlos San Pedro’s work at Pujanza, drawing together Tempranillo from 23 vineyard parcels around Laguardia. It carries the same vineyard-first thinking as the estate’s more limited wines, but in a generous, approachable style that offers impressive quality for its price.

Carlos San Pedro founded Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza in 1998, aged just 25, with a clear ambition to place the vineyard back at the centre of Rioja winemaking. Based outside the historic hilltop town of Laguardia in Rioja Alavesa, the estate now works 40 hectares of vines, all within roughly four kilometres of the winery.

Pujanza focuses on Tempranillo and Viura, varieties deeply connected to the area’s clay-limestone soils and high-altitude growing conditions. Each vineyard and parcel is followed closely, allowing Carlos to adapt his work to the site and vintage rather than forcing every wine into a fixed house style. The result is a range built around freshness, structure and clarity of fruit, with oak used to support rather than dominate.

Hado is the natural introduction to this philosophy. While Pujanza’s upper-tier wines explore individual vineyards in greater detail, Hado brings together 23 parcels to capture the broader character of Laguardia.

Hado is made from 100% Tempranillo grown across 23 vineyard parcels within Laguardia. The sites sit between 450 and 600 metres above sea level on clay-limestone soils, giving the wine ripe fruit alongside valuable freshness and acidity.

The grapes undergo a five-day pre-fermentation maceration. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel vats at 24 to 26°C, with daily pump-overs, followed by malolactic fermentation in the same vessels. The wine is then matured for 12 months in 225-litre French-oak barrels.

Alcohol is 14%. The wine is confirmed as suitable for vegetarians.
