2023 Pouilly-Fumé Silex, Domaine Didier Dagueneau

Loire Valley, France

“The Lightning Strike”

This is Sauvignon Blanc taken to another level. Lemon oil, grapefruit zest and white peach cut through the nose, followed by gunflint, crushed stone, fennel, fresh herbs and a cool smoky edge. It is not loud or tropical; it is taut, intense and unmistakably mineral, with the kind of precision that has made Silex one of the Loire’s most sought-after white wines.

On the palate, it is powerful but sharply drawn, with citrus drive, firm texture and a long, saline, flinty finish. The clay element brings depth and breadth, while the silex soils give the wine its famous spark and tension. This is a serious, age-worthy white for drinkers who want Sauvignon with structure, complexity and real fine-wine presence.

For when
The seafood is exceptional, and the white wine needs to be too.

Pairs with
Oysters, grilled langoustines, scallops with beurre blanc, smoked trout, roast turbot, lemon and herb chicken, goat’s cheese, asparagus or delicate sushi.

Silex is the flagship expression of Domaine Didier Dagueneau, drawn from the flint-rich soils around Saint-Andelain in the Pouilly-Fumé area. It has long been treated as one of the great benchmarks for Sauvignon Blanc: not simply crisp and aromatic, but deep, structured, mineral and built to age. Under Louis-Benjamin Dagueneau, the domaine continues to push the variety far beyond the ordinary, producing whites with extraordinary focus, texture and individuality.

Domaine Didier Dagueneau is one of the defining names of the Loire Valley, based in Saint-Andelain in the heart of the Pouilly-Fumé area. Founded in 1982 by Didier Dagueneau, the estate became famous for reimagining what Sauvignon Blanc could be: lower yields, meticulous vineyard work, biodynamic farming, unconventional cellar choices and wines with power, tension and remarkable ageing ability.

Didier’s son, Louis-Benjamin Dagueneau, now leads the domaine with the same uncompromising energy. The focus remains on old vines, detailed farming and long, carefully judged élevage that gives the wines texture without masking their mineral identity. These are not simple, grassy Sauvignons; they are serious white wines with structure, depth and a very clear sense of place.

Silex is the estate’s most iconic cuvée, named after the flint-rich soils that shape its character. It is prized by collectors and sommeliers for its combination of citrus intensity, smoky mineral drive, fine texture and long ageing potential.

The 2023 Silex is 100% Sauvignon Blanc from flint-rich clay soils around Saint-Andelain in the Pouilly-Fumé area of the Loire. The cuvée was first produced in 1985 and comes from old vines on dense clay with large flint stones, giving the wine its distinctive mineral power, firmness and length.

The vineyard work is carried out with organic and biodynamic principles, with careful hand selection and low yields helping to build concentration. Fermentation takes place in oak, with ageing on the lees to add texture, depth and complexity while preserving the wine’s sharp mineral line.
