St Hallett, Barossa Valley
Few names are as closely bound to Barossa Shiraz as St Hallett. Founded near Tanunda in 1944 by the Lindner family, whose forebears arrived in the valley from Silesia in 1838, the winery began life making fortified wines before turning, from the late 1970s, to the region's greatest asset: its old-vine Shiraz. When the vine pull scheme of the 1980s paid growers to grub up ancient vineyards, St Hallett stood with the Barossa families who refused, helping to protect some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world. Every grape still comes from within the Barossa, and every vineyard parcel is picked, fermented and matured separately, giving the winemakers a remarkable palette of sites to blend from or bottle on their own.
What makes the range so compelling is the way it reads the Barossa's two great sub-regions. On the warm valley floor, the northern parishes of Greenock, Ebenezer and Moppa sit on deep red-brown soils that give muscular, black-fruited Shiraz. This is the source of Blackwell Shiraz, first released in 1994 in honour of long-serving winemaker Stuart Blackwell and matured in American oak for its hallmark black plum and dark chocolate richness. Butchers Cart draws on northern Barossa vineyards of red-brown sand over clay for a generous, open-knit style, while Mighty Ox, introduced with the 2018 vintage from the north-western Barossa, is bottled only in magnum and sealed under cork, a powerful, oak-framed Shiraz made for the cellar. Up in the Eden Valley, at 300 to 550 metres, cooler nights and a slower ripening season bring lift, spice and finer tannins. Higher Earth, first made in 2018 as St Hallett's first wine entirely from Eden Valley fruit, is deliberately labelled Syrah: cool fermented, aged in French oak and defined by violet, dark cherry and cracked black pepper.
At the pinnacle sits Old Block Shiraz. First made in 1980 by Robert O'Callaghan and Stuart Blackwell from a vineyard the Lindners planted in 1912, it now draws on ungrafted vines growing on their own roots across both the Barossa and Eden Valleys, with an average age of more than 90 years in recent vintages. The valley floor brings depth and power, the Eden Valley freshness and line, and the result is one of Australia's great icon Shirazes, dense yet poised and built to age for decades. Together, the collection is a study of the Barossa through a single producer: old vines, individual sites and Shiraz that speaks clearly of where it was grown.
