2022 FIVE, Constantia Glen

Western Cape, South Africa

Cape Grandeur

Constantia Glen’s 2022 FIVE is the estate’s flagship red, a full Bordeaux-style blend with all five classic varieties working in harmony. Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon lead with cassis, black cherry, graphite, tobacco and cedar, while Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec add plum, violet, spice, depth and a dark, brooding richness.

On the palate, it is powerful but impressively composed, with ripe black fruit, fine-grained tannins and a long, polished finish. The 2022 vintage brings a lovely combination of opulence and freshness, giving the wine real structure without losing elegance. This is serious Constantia red with cellar potential, but enough plushness and aromatic detail to make it deeply appealing already.

Constantia Glen is one of the standout modern estates in South Africa’s historic Constantia Valley, a region whose wine story dates back to 1685. The property sits just below Constantia Nek, between Table Mountain and the Constantiaberg, with only 29 hectares of vineyard on a 60-hectare farm. Its elevated slopes, cool maritime breezes and long growing season make it especially well suited to elegant, structured Bordeaux-style wines.

The estate is owned by the Waibel family, who have transformed the property into a focused boutique producer with a reputation for precision and restraint. Cellar master Justin van Wyk has played a major role in its rise, bringing a polished, detail-led approach to both the white and red blends. The range is deliberately clear: TWO, THREE and FIVE are named after the number of varieties in each blend. FIVE is the flagship, a serious, ageworthy Cape red that shows why Constantia is now one of South Africa’s most exciting cool-climate fine wine regions.

The 2022 FIVE is a blend of 28% Cabernet Franc, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 14% Petit Verdot and 9% Malbec. The vineyards sit at 130 to 270 metres above sea level on the Constantia Glen estate, where cool maritime influence and mountain exposure allow for slow, even ripening. Red grape harvesting began late, on 21 March, and continued for four weeks, with the final Cabernet Sauvignon blocks picked on 19 April.

The 2022 season was cool, producing a late harvest with excellent freshness, fine tannins and concentrated fruit. Each variety was harvested and vinified separately before the final blend was assembled. The wine was matured for 19 months in 225-litre French oak barrels, using 80% new oak and 20% second-fill barrels. It was bottled on 12 December 2023 after light filtration, with no fining agents used.

The result is a structured, youthful and ageworthy Cape Bordeaux blend, with dark fruit, graphite, cedar, fine-grained tannins and the freshness to develop beautifully over 10 to 15 years.
